Medical Myths

Being the Holiday Season I thought that this was an appropriate myth to address.
Are poinsettias toxic? Doctors found that the largest study of poinsettia “toxicity” to date involved an analysis of 849,575 plant exposures reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. None of the 22,793 poinsettia cases revealed significant poisoning. No one died from poinsettia exposures or ingestions, and more than 96 percent did not even require treatment in a health care facility. Another study, looking at poinsettia ingestion by rats, could not find a toxic amount of poinsettia, even at doses which would be the human equivalent of consuming 500-600 poinsettia leaves or a pound and a half of the plant’s sap. So no worries if the dog eats the poinsetta’s. Note: you should always call a poison control center if someone eats a plant not intended for consumption.

Medical Myths for the Holiday Season #4

Hangovers can be cured.
The researchers found no scientific evidence supporting any type of cure for alcohol hangovers. Because hangovers are caused by drinking too much alcohol, the only way to avoid one is to drink very little or not at all. Or drinking constantly which niether the Doctor’s or Krukodile support.

Medical Myths for the Holiday Season #3

Eating at night makes you fat!
Studies show an association between obesity and eating more meals late in the day, but that doesn’t mean eating at night causes obesity, the doctors point out. Eating more at any time of day will cause weight gain if it results in ingesting more calories than you need. Simply put, eating to much makes you fat not eating late at night. So go ahead and order that pizza after your shift and feel good about it.

Medical Myths for the Holiday Season #2

The next myth that we will be covering is one I know we have all heard and is the myth that Doctor’s believed to be true before this study. The myth is that you lose most of your body heat through your head. They found out that the belief likely originated with an old military study where subjects wearing arctic survival suits lost most of their body heat through their heads. But that was because the head was the only bare part of their bodies. Typically, we don’t lose more than 10 percent of body heat through our heads. The bottom line is that any uncovered part of the body will lose heat, which is why wearing a hat, even when you’re bundled up everywhere else, is important.

Medical Myths for the Holiday Season

As I continue to do my reserch for the blog I came accross Medical Myths that in fact have been proven to be false by Doctors at the Indiana University. I thought that it might be appropriate to share these for some fun over the next few days. The first Medical Myth that is not true is:
Sugar makes children hyperactive. The researchers cite 12 controlled studies that couldn’t detect any differences in behavior between children who had sugar and those who did not. Even when kids had a diagnosis of hyperactivity problems or were said to be more sensitive to sugar, they did not behave differently whether they ate sugar-laden or sugar-free diets. In fact, the biggest effect of sugar may be on parents. Parents rate their children as being more hyperactive if they are told the child has consumed sugar — even when the child hasn’t really had any sweets. So go ahead and give your children ice cream and candy around bed time and let me know how it works for you.

Golfing Buddies

Two guys go out and play golf together. One of the golfers is half the age of the other. The golf cart’s battery dies and your stuck on the side of the hill. What do you do?
a. The young guy pushes the cart up the hill while the older guy drives.
b. The young guy and old guy push the cart up the hill together.
c. The old guy pushes the cart up the hill while the younger guy drives
d. Get your cell phone out and call the club house.
The answer is in the picture. Realizing the photo is not of the best quality, you can also call Lloyd Everett for the correct answer.

Holiday Party

This year’s partner’s Holiday Celebration was a bit different than years past. For the first time the entire family of each partner was invited. If I’m not mistaken, I believe there were just as many children under the age of 5 than there were adults. I guess I now know what you are all doing with the little time off that you all get. The feedback was that this was a very fun event and the kids can’t wait until next year. The biggest challenge of the day was trying to get pictures of Sallie’s girls, Marisa and Kiara. Can you believe they are camera shy? I found it hard to believe also. Well all the kids were good this year so the all received a gift from Santa, including Krukodile. We are hoping to get some pictures posted so if you have any in your camera, please email them to me. Thanks!
